Shelby was a beautiful 4 year old little girl from Ocean Springs, Mississippi that was always full of life and laughter. She had a smile for everyone. Whenever her mom would pick her up after school if there was ever anything she wanted to do she would tell her, "Mom, I have a good idea."

Shelby loved to learn. By the time she was 18 months old she knew the alphabet by sight and by the time she was two she could spell her name. She had a small computer that she played spelling games on and could spell all the words the computer had to offer her.

For fun she loved to play with her Barbie house and watch T.V. She also loved Winnie the Pooh.

But, now Shelby can do none of these things. On Saturday, February 26, 2000 Hugh Wilton McGowen Jr took her out of her bed at her grandmother's house, where she felt safe and he brutally murdered her. Her body was taken to an abandoned airport and left to be found two days later.

This moron (sorry can't call him a man) in his confession made it clear that he had a couple of chances to bring her back alive but chose not to.

Why, you ask, I guess the world will never know.

Hugh is now sitting in the Jackson County Adult Detention Center awaiting his trial. The last that I heard the state is seeking the death penalty. As soon as I get an update, I will post it here.

This tragedy could have been prevented had the law held this man accountable for his actions 10 years ago when he was on trial for similar charges. But, he got off by pleading no contest to the charges with only a slap on the hand

For the safety of our children this man and other men/women like him have to be stopped. We owe it to our children to do something. PLEASE write your congressmen and ask , no DEMAND, that they do something to save our children. We never know when the next child could be one of our own.
